“Family Lantern Tour”
New Canaan Red Cross Thanks All Involved With Family Lantern Tour

On Friday October 26, through the fog and the mist, guests were led by Lantern Guides to seven different locations around the center of town and were treated to history, stories and legends of the town and its residents as they heard the true story of American Red Cross founder Clara Barton, Civil War and Revolutionary War soldiers from the area, the sea captain who built Vine Cottage,  how the Congregationalists first settled Canaan Parish, the original town hall and the history of the New Canaan Fire Department,.  After the tour, guests were treated to fun and refreshments and an opportunity to speak with the presenters at the Outback Teen Center.

“The Lantern Tour was a town-wide effort that we would like to make an annual event.  The Red Cross has a great deal of experience partnering with corporations and community organizations in order to fulfill its mission” said Diane Castrovinci, Director of Development at the New Canaan Chapter of the American Red Cross, “and this partnership started with Prudential Connecticut Realty. Prudential underwrote the Lantern Tour, but there are many other organizations and people to thank, including co-chair Betty Brown, The Town of New Canaan, Captain Bendernagel and The New Canaan Police Department, The New Canaan Fire Department, Nancy Upton and The New Canaan CERT Team, Arlene Colli and The New Canaan Red Cross Youth Corps, The New Canaan Historical Society, Prudential staff who donated refreshments and of course, the presenters, without whom the event could not have happened; Tom Castrovinci, Arlene Colli, David Jonker, Brian Kammerer, Doreen O’Leary, Don Souden, and Karen Tracy ” .

Vicolo Pizza and Trattoria donated the pizza, Scott Braun of Dream Street Productions donated his services to complete the Red Cross video, Vincent Socci from Prudential designed the invitations, posters and program, Jinx Aliprandi served as Decorations Chair, Emily Restifo, Refreshments Chair and Venture New Generation Portraits donated portrait packages.  The Red Cross extends special thanks go to Justin Tishman and the Outback staff and all Lantern Tour donors and attendees. Ms. Castrovinci emphasized that “the generous support of all of our donors makes it possible for us to continue to fulfill our mission to provide relief to victims of disaster and to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies”.

The New Canaan Red Cross does not receive national or government funding; all local projects and services are supported solely by local donations.  Every gift, as well as the support of Red Cross fundraising events, is welcome and necessary for the continuance of the Red Cross local chapter.  Donations make it possible for the Red Cross to support the needs of the New Canaan community by funding the services they provide on a daily basis; including rides to medical appointments, blood drives, CPR and health and safety classes, disaster and emergency preparedness and response, CERT call outs, and more.

“Paint the Town Red”
Red Cross chapters unite for benefit

Stacey Hafen, executive director of the New Canaan Chapter of the American Red Cross, meets with Lt. Gov. and Mrs. Michael Fedele, and Dianne Auger, CEO of the Mid-Fairfield County Chapter, at the recent “Paint the Town Red” gala.

The New Canaan and Mid-Fairfield County chapters of the American Red Cross teamed up to host their fourth annual fundraiser Saturday, May 5.

Proceeds from “Paint the Town Red,” held at the Sheraton Hotel in Stamford, will benefit New Canaan, Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Norwalk, Stratford, Trumbull, Weston, Westport and Wilton, a jurisdiction of 470,000 residents.

Tom Donelan, a long-time volunteer and supporter of the New Canaan Red Cross who died in April, was honored by New Canaan Board Chairman Rodgers Harper, who said, “Tom was a committed supporter and a very dear friend of the New Canaan Red Cross and his passing has been deeply felt by the entire Red Cross community.”

Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele and his wife, Carol, attended the event to show their support for the Red Cross and the work it does in Connecticut. They visited with attendees during the cocktail reception and silent auction.

“The Red Cross is very grateful to all the gala sponsors, auction donors, attendees, staff and volunteers,” said Stacey Hafen, executive director of the New Canaan Red Cross. “The evening was a huge success, raising the much-needed funds that help the chapters to fulfill their mission. This generous outpouring of support allows the Red Cross to continue to provide valuable services such as blood drives, disaster preparedness and response, support for the elderly and disabled, as well as health and safety training, among other services.”

Information on attending, sponsoring or volunteering for next year’s gala is available from Diane Castrovinci at 966-1663.
